Diversity Committee

Description:

The mission of the Parents Association Diversity Committee is to advance the overall vision of Lakeside School regarding diversity as outlined in the Lakeside School Mission statement.

The goal of the Parents Association Diversity Committee is to play a continuing and vital role in the Lakeside community on issues of diversity and community building. The committee aims to serve as an effective vehicle through which members of our community can raise, discuss and seek to address a wide range of issues and concerns relating to diversity and differences at Lakeside. Diversity is defined in the broadest terms, including economic as well as ethnic, social, religious, gender, sexual orientation and learning differences.

Chairs preside over a committee and work with the administration to sponsor workshops, speakers and events that are directed towards parents, students, faculty and/or administration.

Committee structure:

· Two to three committee chairs, at least one from Middle School and one from Upper School.

 · Time commitment for chairs: 5-6 hours per week, less in summer

 · 80-100 people are currently members of the Diversity committee; the committee members each have their own special interests and generally work on and attend those events/meetings that pertain to their interests.

Events:

· Kick-off event in September (28% of budget) (70-80 people attend)

 · 2-3 issue events with speakers November through February (43% of budget for speakers); 50-60 people attend

 · Six other general meetings; some with speakers or discussion leaders, one meeting is usually devoted to book/article review (5% of budget for coffee and treats) (25-35 people attend)

 · Other events that come up, i.e. student or faculty discussion groups (15% of budget) 45-55 people attend, depending on target group.

 · Special events that vary from year to year (for example, this past summer there was a BBQ on campus for all African American families at Lakeside)

 · Chairs are also expected to be present and provide brief reports at Parents Association Board meetings, three times a year.

 · Publicity for events (9% of the budget)
